Geü Beez is located in San Dionisio Ocotepec, and online at geubeez.com. The Palanque is located near what is called in English the River of Bees. The town is 64 kilometers southwest of Centro. The city is predominantly Zapotec in culture with nearly ten thousand of the little over eleven thousand community members speaking Zapoteco. The town itself sits on small hills and flat lands south of Santiago Matalán. The city received its indigenous name Ocotepec from the abundance of jocote trees in the hills of the area. The town is known for its abundant agriculture and wild herbs and agaves. San Dionisio Ocotepec has a long and deep history of producing mezcal. Some of the town’s mezcaleros claim that the town of Santiago Matatlán learned to make mezcal from those producing it in San Dionisio Ocotepec.
Mezcalero
In the words of Don Crispin Garcia Mendez, “We carry our Zapotec essence with pride. Geü Beez stands for River of Bees which is the location where our Palenque in San Dionisio Ocotepec, Oaxaca México, is located. We are the legitimate inheritors of our lands. We honor our ancestors with rebellion and wisdom. It is due to them that Mezcal tradition has survived, but most of all, our culture survived.” Don Crispin has been producing mezcal for fifty years. He uses the proceeds of his production for reforestation projects around San Dionisio Ocotepec.
